A gang-rape survivor from Haryana’s Hisar has filed a lawsuit against superstar Salman Khan and sought Rs 10 crore as damages, for the actor’s controversial remark comparing his experience of shooting for wrestling scenes in ‘Sultan’ with the plight of a “raped woman.”
The notice was sent to Salman at his residence at Bandra’s Galaxy Apartments on Saturday through the woman’s counsel Rajat Kalsan. The woman who is still undergoing mental trauma, in her complainant pointed out that she was deeply hurt by the actor’s comment and added that her image was tarnished.
"My client is passing through a very troublesome period of psychological trauma after hearing your statement. Your statement, dated 21-06-2016, is solely responsible for her mental and psychological degradation and she is in touch with a psychiatrist for counselling,'' advocate Kalsan of the Punjab and Haryana High Court stated in the legal notice.
"Your statement is wrong, illegal and against the spirit of the Constitution of India and you are liable for every type of civil, criminal liabilities," the notice further read.
The woman was kidnapped and allegedly rape by 10 people in Hisar four years ago. Her father committed suicide following the incident. Four out of 10 accused were sentenced to life imprisonment and the rape survivor had moved the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking death penalty for them. The rape survivor now works for an NGO working for rehabilitation of rape victims.
A leading daily quoted her as saying, “How can such a prominent personality use such words? I have lost everything and I am yet to come to terms with the trauma I have gone through. How could he take such things so lightly?”
“Unfortunately, he too has become part of all those for whom women folk, especially rape victims, are nothing more than objects. It's not just me but other victims who are part of our group are also disturbed due to the actor's statement," she added.
Salman had made the “raped woman” remark while describing his strenuous shooting schedule for ‘Sultan’. He was slammed on social media for his “insensitive” comment. His father Salim Khan had apologised on his behalf saying his son's intention was not wrong.
"Undoubtedly what Salman said was wrong...but his intention was not wrong," the veteran scriptwriter tweeted.
