While speaking at the occasion Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra said, “At the outset I would like to congratulate this summit at the time whn the country is talking and guessing about what smart city actually is. We can see lot of enthusiasm and hope amongst the people that quality of life on their city will increase and go to next level and city will be more livable. After independence we always thought India lived in villages and we have an agrarian economy we should plan more for villages. Urbanization started in 80's rapidly but we were shying away in managing as cities were growing in size n population and quality of life was growing. Its right time we understand India lives in Villages as well as Cities. State like Maharashtra, 50% population is urbanized. Now the rate of urbanization and rate of infrastructure is not matched now. Cities need to be smart we need some interventions like technology which is the answer. Using resources optimally. Smart City is for common man and not only for affluent alone. Through this the productivity will increase which was till now denied for common man. GDP is 65% in cities, through GDP we get revenues and we can thus deploy this for rural life to make it affluent. It’s not just making a city wifi, its making the optimal use of the resources. Through citizen engagement, several hundred thousand citizens were pulled in through surveys and poll by people from their cities when we decided on the smart city project. Clean city, safe city, health, education and employment are the basics and needs to be sustained with it. IT and ICT backbone whether it is transport, solid waste management anything. In Mah through our own resources and FDI in Smart City we will start irrespective of how many cities Central Government intend to start. I would like to congratulate CIDCO for starting the first in the country. With initiative like this summit I hope his idea percolates to all and new dimensions are added to the initiative.”
