LANXESS showcases water treatment solutions at the Water Expo 2016 in Chennai, Hall 1 E-1

·         Launches new reverse osmosis elements with innovative feed spacers from its Lewabrane® product line in the market
·         Official unveiling of new Condensate Polishing module for LewaPlus® software
Chennai: LANXESS, the global specialty chemicals company, is showcasing it’s ion exchange resins and membrane technologies at Water Today’s Water Expo 2016, with a special focus on introducing novel reverse osmosis (RO) elements from its Lewabrane® product line that display improved performance along with the launch of a new software module for LewaPlus® design software. A special type of Lewatit® Ion Exchange Resin is used as an organic scavenger for the reduction of COD and Color of the treated effluent in various industries for example, Textile, Tannery, Electroplating etc.Aworking model using Lewatit® Ion Exchange resin Lewatit® S- 6368A is displayed at the booth demonstrates the color removal of the treated industrial effluent.
Speaking on the recent developments, Mr. Prakash Shanmugam, Head of Business Unit Liquid Purification Technologies, LANXESS India, said, “With the introduction of new products from Lewabrane® and the new software module for LewaPlus®, we are well positioned to make the most of the opportunities that the market provides. Exhibitions like Water Expo give us the platform to showcase the wide range of products forwater and waste treatment, and also exhibit our sustainable, innovative solutions. Water Expo is an important channel of communication for informing our customers and sales agencies in the water treatment industry of new product developments.”
For novel reverse osmosis (RO) elements from its Lewabrane® product line, LANXESS has succeeded in a very short time in developing a market-ready, novel feed spacer used in the membrane element. It provides for optimized flow in the RO element and thus lower energy consumption. Combining it with LANXESS’ proven, Lewabrane®-brand reverse osmosis membrane results in high-performance products suitable for any number of applications. Initially, two, new products are to be introduced: Lewabrane® B400 LE ASD and Lewabrane® B400 FR ASD. Optimized for applications in brackish water, these elements have standard geometries (length: 40 inches, diameter: 8 inches) and are characterized by very low energy consumption (LE = low energy) and high fouling resistance (FR = fouling resistant).
These new products in the Lewabrane® line were developed as part of a cooperative research project involving LANXESS as well as regional and international partners. The feed spacers incorporated in the membrane elements are multifunctional. They create space between the membrane surfaces for fast-flowing water, support the membrane in the process and cause turbulent water flow. Although turbulent flow helps to lower salt concentrations at the surface of the membrane, and to reduce the extent of concentrate polarization, it also causes an increased pressure drop compared, for instance, to laminar flow. The optimal design of the feed spacers therefore is of critical importance to the properties of the elements. Filaments or strands of different thickness are used for the novel feed spacers. The new product family is named after this alternating strand design (ASD).
Tests of prototypes confirms, significantly lower pressure drop than standard grades and competitor products. Furthermore, the tendency towards scaling in the element was reduced.
Another highlight at the Water Expo this year is the introduction of the new software module for LewaPlus® which is an uncomplicated, reliable and precise way of designing condensate polishing. The software module can be used to model H/OH cycles in the presence of various alkalization reagents. This involves taking account of both the individual dissociation characteristics of ammonia, ethanolamine and morpholine and – uniquely – also their specific influences on the capacity of the cation exchange resins used. As a result, the pH value, the concentration of the alkalization agent, and the capacities of the mixed-bed and upstream low-bed cation exchangers can be optimally coordinated – at the push of a button or even the click of a mouse.
This provides an extremely high level of corrosion protection for the plant with maximum cost-effectiveness. The software currently offers five other components in addition to the condensate polishing module. There is one each for modeling demineralization using ion exchange or reverse osmosis. Combining this with the mixed bed module enables the design of a system for treating feed water for water-steam cycles, for example.
LANXESS Liquid Purification Technologies offers its customers a broad product portfolio and extensive experience in both ion exchange (IX) and reverse osmosis (RO). Ion exchange resins from the extensive Lewatit® line have been synonymous with high performance and quality for over 75 years. The Lewabrane® range of membrane elements rounds off this product portfolio.
