Joining twitteratis in ridiculing celebrity author Shobha De for her deriding tweet about Indian contenders at Rio Olympics, megastar Amitabh Bachchan took a dig at her while lauding shuttler PV Sindhu for assuring a medal for the country.
Sindhu defeated Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara and qualified for women's badminton singles final late on Thursday evening, thus assuring at least a silver medal.
In a veiled attack on the writer without naming her, Big B in a series of tweets congratulated Sindhu and said that she has silenced ‘loud mouths’ and expressed his desire to take a selfie with her.
“Aap "khaali haath" nahein, medal leke wapas aa rahein hain .. aur hum aapke saath 'selfie' nikalne chahate hain !! (you will be coming back not empty handed, but with a medal, and I want to take a selfie with you)”
“Never ever underestimate power of female gender! #PVSindhu you have destroyed so many 'naysayers' .. you are the PRIDE of INDIA!”
“aapne 'bolne walon' ki bolti bund kar di .. karm bolta hai aur wo kabhi kabhi 'kalam' ko bhi hara deta hai ! BADHAI !! (You have silenced the critics. Action speaks louder than words and sometimes even defeat the pen! Congratulations,” Amitabh Bachchan posted on the micro-blogging site.
Earlier last week, Shobha De had mocked the Indian sportspersons at Rio Olympics and tweeted, “Goal of Team India at the Olympics: Rio jao. Selfies lo. Khaali haat wapas aao. (Go to Rio, take selfies and come back with empty hands) What a waste of money and opportunity.”
De had had received huge backlash for her insensitive remarks from all corners. Former cricketer Virendra Sehwag also took a dig at her earlier after wrestler Sakshi Malik won the bronze medal, and wrote, “#SakshiMalik ke gale me medal kitna ‘Sobha De’ raha hai na.”
His witty tweet broke the internet and was hailed as the best response to the celebrated writer. Sehwag himself retweeted it with another witty comment, “Bilkul, isliye Shobha Na De aise kaam nahi karne chahiye.”
